Smartphone Software Updates

A smartphone would be a high-tech paperweight without its operating system.

An operating system is software that allows smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices to run applications and programs.

(Software can be quickly defined as internal instructions that tell a computer or mobile device what to do.)

Two of the most popular operating systems for smartphones are Android and iOS.

A smartphone’s operating system will control how a device looks (in terms of aesthetics) and how it works (e.g. how, exactly, you can search your smartphone 🔎).

A software update is actually an operating system update

Security Updates

Many people are reluctant to update their phone’s software for a variety of reasons. But it is important to keep your phone’s software up to date because a software update will include security updates (which can help protect your smartphone from “viruses” and other forms of malware).

Things on my phone have changed since yesterday!

“Sally”

My most recent tech help appointment dealt with an Android smartphone whose functionality had changed considerably from one day to the next (things had to be done a different way now).

Sally also told me that her phone had also started behaving erratically (e.g. applications icons would arbitrarily move around and had even duplicated themselves).

As it turns out (after researching the user support forums for Sally’s smartphone), both of these issues derived from a recent software update.

A software update can be like interior decorating in that the house itself looks exactly the same on the outside but has changed considerably on the inside.

Bugs

The sudden erratic behavior of Sally’s phone after a software update can be attributed to “bugs”. That is parts of the software update were poorly designed and/or poorly implemented.

Quite often, these bugs are fixed with the next software update which could come at any time.

What to do in the meantime?

I suggested to Sally to be outcome focused when using her smartphone.

(And not to be especially concerned with why things suddenly look different and why she needs to do things a different way after a software update.)

For example, Sally could simply search or browse around her Android Smartphone’s text application when she wanted to send a text message.

And then use the text app mindfully, following visual cues within the app’s graphical user interface to accomplish her current task at hand.

Resolving issues with the Libby App

When people are having issues with their Libby App, it is often because…

  1. The device they are using it on is obsolete.
  2. They have not updated their device’s software to the minimum version that Libby requires.
  3. They are not entering their pin number correctly (or do not know their pin number).
  4. After the installation, they selected the Bridgeport Public Library in Connecticut (like I did!)

Obsolescence

An “obsolete” device is one which the manufacturer has discontinued support for it in all regions, without exceptions. This means that repair shops and other service providers can’t order repair parts for obsolete models. And also, software updates will no longer be issued for it — making the device unsafe to go online with.

Technology ages faster than dog years and rule of thumb if your device is more than 7 years old, it could be obsolete. If you are not sure, the Library offers open Tech Help Hours every Tuesday from 12 PM to 4 PM (other hours by appointment).

Software update

Many people are hesitant to update their device’s software. Please don’t be! Software updates contain important security updates.

Pin number uncertainty

If you are not sure what your pin number is, call the library 304.842.8248.

Reinstall Libby App

Remove Libby from your device and reinstall it from your device’s App Store and then be sure to select your Bridgeport Public Library.

Here is a short video on that procedure…

Importing photos from a smartphone into a computer

A frequently asked question here on the Bridgeport Public Library Tech Help front is how to get photos and videos from a smartphone 📱 into a computer 🖥️ (in order to free up storage space on the smartphone).

Start with a physical connection

iPhone connected to Windows 10 laptop with a Lightning cable

Look for visual cues on both your computer screen and smartphone screen

“Device is ready” message (lower right corner of computer screen)
This is a frequently missed visual cue. You have to give the laptop permission to access the photos and videos on the iPhone.

The Import Procedure

After the physical connection is made and both devices are able to talk to each other, you can import (actually copy) the photos and videos stored on your smartphone into your computer.

To do this, you can start with the Photos application on your computer and then as always proceeding methodically while following visual cues 👀 (i.e. “Think about what you want to do and then look around for a way to do it”), start the import procedure…

You can use the mouse to noodle around an app’s interface to find the functionality you need

Still proceeding methodically, select what you want to import from the smartphone into the computer…

Conceptually speaking, this is copying “stuff” from Point A to Point B

Don’t forget the backups

Before you delete the photos and videos on your smartphone, I would recommend backing up your photos and videos to an external storage device — which we will cover how to do in the next Tech Help blog post..
